Newslener
2003

Editorial

This new issue of the Villa Decius
Newsletter presents an overview of events
and initiatives undertaken in 2003. Inside
you will find a calendar, which includes
general information about the dates and
topics of the projects we organise. Events
and meetings have been grouped into the-
matic blocks under appropriate headings.
Our projects are often part of continuing
programmes, so the descriptions include
identifiers showing which projects are part
of a recurring programme C ,and which
are new rn

The thematic block "Between the East
and the West" includes information about
international conferences aimed at develo-
ping social, economic, political, and cultu-
ral cooperation between Central European
countries. The "For Democracy" chapter
presents information on international semi-
nars that stimulate knowledge of the funda-
mental democratic values that are impor-
tant for building a civic society. The "Litera-
ry Salon" invites you to take part in our
debates about literature, literary criticism
and the role of the writer in the contempo-
rary world. Polish and foreign authors, cri-
tics, publishers and special guests of the
Villa - writers staying here during their se-
veral months' long scholarships - take part
in these debates. You can find our range of
concerts and theatrical perfor mances as
well as the programme of the Summer Aca-
demy of Arts under "Artistic Landscapes"
August has traditionally been reserved for
singers, dancers and actors. The subject
of art will also come up in the context of
financing artistic and cultural projects. For
several years, we have organised workshops
and seminars devoted to the financing of
culture by the private sector as well as
entrepreneurship within culture itself. Thro-
ugh reading the Villa Decius Newsletter you
will also get acquainted with the progress
of conservation work within the Villa Decius
palace complex and with our conference
programme.

We welcome you and invite you to
take part in our programmes. We also
express our heartfelt thanks to all the Friends
and Patrons of Villa Decius who enable us
to further develop the humanist tradition of
this place.

			BETWEEN EAST AND WEST

Models of cooperalion between
Easl and Wesl. The Weimar
Triangle and Ukraine,
a conference

C Ten years after the formal creation of
the Weimar Triangle whose aim was to sup-
port Poland during its integration with the
European Union, the countries included in
this alliance face entirely new challenges.
There are questions concerning further co-
operation between France, Germany and
Poland in a united Europe, support for
Ukraine - the eastern neighbour of the We-
imar Triangle countries, the relationship with
the Visegrad Group of countries, and finally
a platform for futur e cooperation with other
EU countries. The participants in this long-
term programme, which comprises a cycle
of seminars and conferences, are divided
into thematic workgroups. The viewpoints
that emerge in workgroups are later pre-
sented to all participants in the meeting.
Tangible results of the project include post-
conference publications and specific agre-
ements concerning cooperation between par-
ticipating institutions and organisations. The
pilot conference, held in 2002, was atten-
ded, inter alia, by the Polish and Ukrainian
Ministers for European Integration - Danuta
Hubner and Oleksandr Chalyi, the former
Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Borys
Tarasyuk, the representatives of the EU and
the Council of Europe as well as numerous
enterprises and non-gover nmental organi-
sations from Germany, France, Poland, Ukra-
ine and Romania.

Visegrad Summer School,
the second edition

C The aim of the Summer School is
European integration without destroying those
aspects of culture that make our part of
Europe distinct and diverse; another aim is
fighting mutual prejudice by learning its so-
cial and psychological sources and me-
chanisms. The participants in the workshops
are undergraduate and postgraduate stu-
dents, young teachers and journalists from
the four Visegrad Group countries (10 per-
sons from each country) selected on the
basis of their CVs, motivation letters and
letters of reference - and additionally obse-
rvers from other Central and Eastern Euro-
pean countries. The lectures, work-
shops and discussions are run by
leading specialists from allover
Europe. This year's programme
concentrates on two thematic gro-
ups the politico-economic and the
socio-cultural one. The dates of
the Visegrad School workshops co-
incide with the European referen-
da in the \1segrad Group coun-
tries. Thus the workshops will pro-
vide an occasion to discuss the
results of those referenda as well
as the opportunities and challen-
ges facing young people in the
enlarged Union.

The Adam Mickiewicz Inslilule,
Krakow Branch

The Adam Mickiewicz Institute in
Krakow promotes Poland and Polish cultu-
re abroad and is active in the domain of
international cultural cooperation. The Insti-
tute wants to create and strengthen the
image of Poland as an open and modern
country with a rich culture. This objective is
achieved through compr ehensive program-
mes - the Europalia, the Polish Year in Spain
and Austria - that present Poland in selec-
ted countries. These programmes usually
comprise many (up to several hundred)
events - exhibitions, concerts, theatrical
perfor mances, film screenings and a varie-
ty of publications and literary events on
offer. These last are being prepared by the
Krakow branch of the Adam Mickiewicz
Institute, which is housed in \i1lla Decius.
The branch offers comprehensive informa-
tion concerning Polish literatur e and the
Polish publishing market to foreign publi-
shers, literary agents and institutions run-
ning literary programmes. The branch also
hosts a website about Polish books http!/
www.polska2000.pl/and issues publications
devoted to Polish literature, e.g. "New Bo-

it prepares the literary pr ogrammes of Po-
lish presentations during international book
fairs and publishes foreign-language edi-
tions of "Lokomotywa" ("The Locomotive")
by Julian Tuwim - the most popular Polish
children's book. The Krakow branch of the
Institute also administers the Program Trans-

			ARTISTIC laNDSCAPES

Music of Ihe European Courls,
concerts and ballet performances

C This cycle is devoted to the art
created in the most important court music
circles of the past centuries. The programme
revives the tradition of musical meetings or-
ganised at Villa Decius by its previous owners.
The first owner of the Villa, Justus Ludovicus
Decius, invited his friends and scholars stay-
ing at King Sigismund the Old's castle. In the
19th century, Duchess Marcelina Czartoryska
organised artistic salon meetings and histori-
cal concerts in the Villa. The rooms of the
Villa provide an ideal setting for earfy music
performed on instruments modelled on histo-
rical ones, such as the Baroque violin, viola
da gamba or harpsichord.

So far, eight concerts have taken pla-
ce as part of the cycle. They were all accom-
panied by dance and vocal performances.
The first evening, during which the audience
listened to medieval and Renaissance music,
was entitled "Wawel" - the name referred to
the relationship between the royal court and
Villa Decius during the Renaissance. The
second evening - "Sanssouci" - featured music
composed at the court of Frederick II the
Great, while the third one - "Venice" - trans-
ferred the listeners to 17th century Italy, to
the Venetian Doges' Court During subsequ-
ent evenings we invited our audience to En-
glish royal courts, Habsburg courts in Vien-
na, the court of the Esterhazy princes as well
as an old Polish manor and the Gonzaga
court in Mantua. The concerts are embelli-
shed by the performances of the soloists of
the Ardente Sole court ballet who perform
historical dances in carefully reconstructed
historical garments.

			CONSERVATION PROGRAMME

Conservalion Programme

K The conservation programme of Villa
Decius has two aspects - on the macro
scale, it comprises the preservation of the
historic character of the building complex
and the construction of gardens around the
Villa. On the micro scale, the programme
aims at furnishing the interiors of the buil-
dings with stylish or historic furniture, pain-
tings and tapestries. In 2002, as part of the
conservation programme, the first stage of
the reconstruction of the Gothic garden situ-
ated beyond the Laski House began. The
work was conducted by Marcin Gajda's firm
"Archikrak" Studio Sztuki Ogrodowej which
sponsored the reconstruction. The conse-
rvation of the gate in the rose garden was
also completed. The work was financed by
the Spo!eczny Komitet Odnowy Zabytk6w
Krakowa (Public Committee for the Renova-
tion of Krak6w Monuments). In 2003, the
conservation programme at Villa Decius will
comprise the repair of the terrace and the
installation of new insulation. The course of
